This week’s show, brought to you by our beloved Central Pacific Time (s/o to Lei and Roger!) features the poetry and music of wondergod Izik!!
Not many musical artists get their start by finding inspiration in the sounds of a vacuum cleaner. But that’s exactly how Izik got started. At four years old, his mother discovered him sitting on the staircase humming to himself while matching the pitch of the vacuum as she cleaned their family home.
Singer-songwriter Izik distinguishes his unique sound by the soulful singers that guided his youth. From Ella Fitzgerald to James Morrison, Kalapana to Loyal Garner as well as powerhouse vocalists like Mariah Carey and Beyonce, his musical influences showcase the profound ability to tell stories through song. Born in Provo, Utah and raised on Molokaʻi, Izik was drawn to music as a vehicle of self expression, teaching himself to play the acoustic guitar as a teenager and cultivating his own artistic voice.
In 2012 he took the stage for the first time in Honoluluʻs island music scene, quickly making the rounds on local stages throughout Oʻahu. Izik released his debut album, Obsidian, in 2016 produced by Imua Garza and Zeo music. The innovative pop/R&B album showcased his strong, signature vocals and deeply layered songwriting skills. Obsidian earned two Nā Hōkū Hanohano award nominations and his powerful live performance at the 2017 awards show that demonstrated his incredible vocal prowess.
Through The Creative Labs Immersive and Hawaii Songwriting Festival, Izik sold several original songs to an international conglomerate and earned his first Nā Hōkū Hanohano award in 2018 as a songwriter on Kimie Miner’s Song Of The Year, Bamboo. Izik has performed on stages throughout Hawaiʻi, California, New York, Sydney, Auckland, Melbourne. He has opened for the likes of Deandre Brackensick, Jhene Aiko, Leroy Sanchez and Paramore, as well as headlined shows at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the New York Botanical Gardens.
Izik’s artistic showcases are thoughtfully curated, incorporating visual arts such as photography, videography, graphic art, spoken word, dance and fashion into his performances. As the executive producer of his annual showcases at Doris Duke Theatre and The Hawaii Convention Center, the visual arts elements were essential to enhancing the value of music production, creating an immersive artistic experience. His unconventional choices are intended to challenge the audience to embrace new ways of artistic expression that are daring and authentic.
As the 2019 Honolulu Biennial headliner, Izik is eager to share new music that transcend genres and highlights his affinity for poetic songwriting. His second studio album with Imua Garza is scheduled for release later this year, and reflects the transformative three years since his initial debut.
